Hydrographical variability on the French continental shelf in the Bay of Biscay, during the 1990s ArchiMer
Puillat, Ingrid; Lazure, Pascal; Jegou, Anne-marie; Lampert, Luis; Miller, P.
A synthesis of 9 years of hydrographic measurements, acquired during approximately 25 cruises (1992-2000) on the French continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay, is presented. The main focus is upon salinity distribution, as it is little known in this area. The whole of the data set covers I I months of the year, with some sampling fields repeated several times a year, for multiple years. This time-series allows temperature and salinity distributions to be studied together with their seasonal, inter-annual and mesoscale variability. The seasonal trend in temperature can be described in three stages, which are in agreement with past studies. Thermal stratification occurs between May and mid-September in a layer similar to 50 m in thickness, whereas the...

Hydrography of the Artabro Gulf in summer: Western coastal limit of Cantabrian seawater and wind-induced upwelling at Prior Cape ArchiMer
Prego, R; Varela, M.
The Artabro Gulf (1 500 km(2) north-west of the Iberian Peninsula) has been studied based on data obtained in August 1993, under typical summer meteorological conditions (COPLA 893 cruise). This is the first study on the summer hydrography of the Artabro Gulf. During this season, the hydrography of this area is quite complex and must be understood in terms of three factors: 1) upwelling, 2) two different eastern North Atlantic Central Water (ENACW) water masses and 3) rias water exchange. A local wind-induced upwelling of ENACW, (subpolar) occurs off Prior Cape. The plume is located off the gulf coastline, but inside the continental shelf. The frontal zone, rich in nutrients and chlorophyll, is parallel to the gulf line, starting in the Prior region and...

Lagrangian pathways in the southern Benguela upwelling system ArchiMer
Ragoasha, Natalie; Herbette, Steven; Cambon, Gildas; Veitch, Jennifer; Reason, Chris; Roy, Claude.
The effect of ocean currents on fish eggs and larvae during their journey from spawning to nursery grounds in the Southern Benguela upwelling system is poorly understood. The survival and successful transport of fish eggs and larvae results from complex biological and physical processes. This study focuses on the advective processes, more specifically on how the dynamics and characteristics of the ocean currents shape the Lagrangian pathways in the Southern Benguela. A mesoscale eddy resolving interannual (1989–2010) simulation of the region, with a horizontal resolution of 7.5 km, is used to study processes impacting the connectivity between the western edge of the Agulhas Bank and the west coast upwelling region. A set of Lagrangian experiments are...

The project “Risco”, supported by the “Pôle Mer” and funded by the Regional Council of Brittany, deals with specific risks of mortality of oysters, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated on the bottom, in a subtidal bay of South Brittany : the bay of Quiberon (56, France). Massive mortalities of oysters were reported in summer 2006 in this bay, exclusively located in the deep muddy area with a positive gradient eastward. A validated biogeochemical model was applied in order to simulate the dissolved oxygen over 2000-2006 : it revealed several episodes of hypoxia, more or less intense according to years, but with the same spatial distribution. This approach proved 2006 to be the most hypoxic year since 2000. The hypoxia was due to a rare conjunction of 3 factors :...

Linking wind and interannual upwelling variability in a regional model of the southern Benguela - art. no. 2188 ArchiMer
Blanke, Bruno; Roy, Claude; Penven, Pierrick; Speich, Sabrina; Mcwilliams, James; Nelson, Greville.
We quantify the wind contribution to the development of interannual sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies along the shelf of southern Africa. We compare numerical simulations that differ only in the amount of variability kept in the ERS1/2-derived surface wind forcing. Surprisingly, most of the cold and warm episodes over the Agulhas Bank are strictly related to local fluctuations of the forcing, whereas the shelf of the west coast extending 400 km north of Cape Columbine is equally sensitive to open-sea wind fluctuations. We diagnose the respective role of mesoscale eddy activity and of low frequency and intra-monthly wind fluctuations in generating interannual SST variability. The fair degree of correlation obtained at a few locations between the model...

Lithostratigraphic Summary For Leg 175: Angola-Benguela Upwelling System OceanDocs
Anderson, L.; Maslin, M.A.; Jansen, F.; Lin, H.; Pufahl, P.K.; Pérez, M.; Brüchert, V.; Vidal, L..
During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 175, 40 holes were drilled at 13 sites, and 8003 m were recovered with the aim of reconstructing the late Neogene history of the Angola-Benguela upwelling system on the southwest African margin. This system is one of the great upwelling regions of the world and is characterized by organic-rich sediments that provide an excellent record of productivity back to the middle Miocene. Understanding the sedimentology and stratigraphy of these sediments will provide important new information on the paleoceanography of this region, including the complex role the ocean plays in global carbon cycling and climate change. This contribution summarizes the sedimentologic and stratigraphic data compiled on board the JOIDES Resolution...

Mesoscale hydrological variability induced by northwesterly wind on the French continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Puillat, I; Lazure, Pascal; Jegou, Anne-marie; Lampert, Luis; Miller, P.
On the French continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay the variability of the surface salinity distribution has been mainly investigated at the seasonal and inter-annual scales. Here, new mesoscale features such as lower-salinity lenses observed in model results are investigated by hydrological measurements acquired during 8 cruises (1997-2000). These lenses are 50-80 km wide and similar to 30 m thick and occur during westerly to northerly wind events that push offshore the less saline water of river Plumes. These water masses detached from the coast are replaced with upwelled saltier water at the coast, so coastal upwelling is often observed at the same time along Landes and southern Brittany coasts. We show that in addition to the influence of seasonal and...

Modélisation biophysique pour la prévision du recrutement ArchiMer
Allain, Gwenhael.
Exploited fish populations are dependent on recruitment (i.e. size of the new year class) to sustain their abundance. Recruitment variations are related to hydroclimatic variations and may accentuate the detrimental effects of fishing. Recruitment prediction requires accurate fisheries oceanographic tools, which are expected to be more reliable than large-scale correlation analyses between fish abundance and climate variables. Recruitment is the result of the integration over a season and large oceanic areas of processes affecting larval survival, which are dependent on small-scale mechanisms. Hydrodynamic models are a tool to perform this integration. This thesis aims at exploring and modelling physical-biological interaction mechanisms in order to...

Modern sedimentation in the Cabo Frio upwelling system, Southeastern Brazilian shelf Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mahiques,Michel M. de; Bícego,Marcia C.; Silveira,Ilson C.A.; Sousa,Silvia H.M.; Lourenço,Rafael A.; Fukumoto,Marina M..
The analyses of Uk'37 paleotemperatures and sedimentological parameters in box cores from the Cabo Frio upwelling zone, southeastern Brazil, were used to understand the modern sedimentation as well as to evaluate the role played by the upwelling process in the sedimentary patterns. Three box-cores located closer to the upwelling area show a general trend of cooling waters taking place in the last 700 years. Since the present upwelling is dependent on local and remote wind regime, a phase of dominating NE winds favors a more effective upward transport of the cold thermocline level South Atlantic CentralWater towards the coast. The intensification in the upwelling regime for the last ca. 700 years can be associated with the strengthening of the NE winds off...

Origin of fine-scale wind stress curl structures in the Benguela and Canary upwelling systems ArchiMer
Desbiolles, Fabien; Blanke, Bruno; Bentamy, Abderrahim; Grima, Nicolas.
Numerous studies have shown the primary importance of wind stress curl in coastal upwelling dynamics. The main goal of this new analysis is to describe the QuikSCAT surface wind stress curl at various scales in the Benguela and Canary upwelling systems. The dominant spatial pattern is characterized by cyclonic curl near continental boundaries and anticyclonic curl offshore, in association with equatorward alongshore (upwelling favorable) wind stress. At a smaller scale, we demonstrate the sensitivity of the QuikSCAT wind stress curl to coastal processes related to sea surface temperature (SST) mesoscale fluctuations by presenting a linear relationship between the curl and crosswind SST gradients. Despite the spatial and temporal sensitivity of the...

Paleoceanographic evolution of the Gulf of Tehuantepec (Mexican Pacific) during the last ~6 millennia ArchiMer
García-gallardo, Ángela; Machain-castillo, María Luisa; Almaraz-ruiz, Laura.
Oceanographic dynamics in the Gulf of Tehuantepec (GT) are the direct consequence of climate variability, mainly influenced by the strong wind regime locally called “Tehuanos” and the interactions between the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The area is characterized by intense upwelling driven by the Tehuanos within one of the largest Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZ) in the world. Upwelling carries nutrient-rich subsurface waters to the surface and provides marine resources to the coasts conforming one of the main economic sectors in the region. In this study, sediment core MD02-2521 is used to perform the first high-resolution paleoceanographic reconstruction of the last 6 millennia in the GT. The main focus is put...

Phase lag between Intertropical Convergence Zone migration and subtropical monsoon onset over the northwestern Indian Ocean during Marine Isotopic Substage 6.5 (MIS 6.5) ArchiMer
Malaize, B.; Joly, C.; Venec-peyre, M. -t.; Bassinot, F.; Caillon, N.; Charlier, K..
High-resolution faunal and isotopic analyses of foraminifera were performed on core MD96-2073 (10 degrees 94'N, 52 degrees 62'E, 3142 m depth), located close to Socotra Island in the upwelling area of the Somali Basin ( NW Indian Ocean). This work focuses on Marine Isotopic Stage 6.5 in order to reconstruct paleo-upwelling changes and their links with the Arabian Sea summer monsoon and the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Correspondence and cluster analyses of planktonic foraminiferal abundances, partly controlled by temperature and water mass productivity, together with an upwelling intensification index, show the occurrence of a strong upwelling between 176 and 165 ka. This upwelling intensification responds to a northward...
